Homemade Garlic Sauce For Kebabs
Kebab shop garlic sauce, the perfect sauce for kebabs! Get ready to transform your burgers, salads, kebabs, fries and more with this tasty recipe. Let’s get cooking (or rather mixing) …
A kebab isn’t a kebab without heaps of drizzled garlic sauce on top – I just had to say it! It’s the finishing touch to pretty much every wrap I make, and it’s one of my favourite sauces EVER.
Seriously, I could put this sauce on anything! It’s incredibly creamy, smooth, tangy and full of garlic flavour (and you only need 5 basic ingredients to make it).
I’ve developed this recipe to have both a mayonnaise and Greek style yoghurt base, with added spices and of course lots of garlic. It’s a very simple combo that’s easy to make yet it’s big on taste and flavour.
Why You’ll Like This Recipe
- Ready in less than 5 minutes, this recipe is extremely quick and easy
- There’s no out of the ordinary ingredients
- You can impress your friends and family with this fakeaway sauce (I certainly do).
- You can adjust the level of seasonings and garlic to suit your own personal taste. This recipe is SO adaptable!
- I also think it’s a great way to use up leftover garlic, Greek style yoghurt or mayonnaise.
Recipe Ingredients
Below are the ingredients I used to make this recipe:
- Greek Style Natural Yoghurt: Use plain Greek style yoghurt; avoid sweet or flavoured yoghurts.
- Mayonnaise: Any brand of mayonnaise is good to use; I normally use full-fat mayonnaise.
- Lemon Juice: Adds a tangy taste to the garlic sauce. I like to use fresh lemons but rarely I buy lemon juice and use that.
- Garlic: I like to buy minced garlic, it’s pre-minced into fine pieces. However, you can use garlic cloves and mince them yourself.
- Seasonings: For extra flavour I added salt and black pepper.
How To Make Kebab Shop Garlic Sauce
Here’s a summary of how I make kebab shop garlic sauce. You can get the full recipe instructions on the recipe card below:
Step One:
I start by spooning minced garlic into a small mixing bowl. If I’m using garlic cloves, then I’ll use a garlic press to mince the garlic into small pieces.
I sometimes use a pestle and mortar to grind the garlic cloves into a fine paste. But actually, this is my least favourite option as I find pieces of garlic get grinded into the sides making removal a little difficult.
Step Two:
In a mixing bowl, I add Greek style yoghurt, mayonnaise, lemon juice, diced garlic, black pepper and salt to it.
Step Three:
Then I mix the ingredients together with a whisk until it’s evenly distributed and the ingredients have come together.
And just like that, your takeaway garlic sauce is ready! At this stage, if necessary, I like to give the sauce a try and add more ingredients to suit my taste.
My Top Tips
If you’re worried about the lemon juice causing the mixture to split. One tip I recommend is to add the lemon juice to the minced garlic first, then mix in the rest of the ingredients.
If you don’t want any texture in your sauce, then I would use garlic paste instead of dicing garlic cloves yourself. Alternatively, you can pour the mixture in a food processor for a quick blitz before serving.
How To Make The Garlic Milder
If you want to reduce the garlic intensity in this sauce, I’ve noted a few of my favourite options. You can start by halving the number of garlic used in this recipe, start with less and add more if necessary after tasting it.
If you can’t get your hands on minced garlic or garlic cloves, you can use garlic powder or garlic granules instead. It’s not as intense as fresh garlic but will still add a garlicky taste.
Another option is to blanch the garlic by placing it in a bowl of boiled water for 5 to 10 minutes, this will reduce the garlic flavour. Alternatively, you can roast the garlic cloves before use (however, these two methods will add time to the recipe).
What To Serve With Homemade Garlic Sauce
Of course I’m going to start off by saying kebab, but actually, I like to serve this sauce with homemade salads, grilled koftas or sometimes I simply use it as a dip for fries.
If you want to make a Turkish takeaway feast, then you can serve this garlic sauce with lamb shish kebabs, doner kebabs, homemade flatbreads and even these tasty chicken shish wraps.
Recently, I had battered sausage and dirty fries for dinner, and yes, I poured this sauce all over it!
How To Store And Keep
Place the garlic sauce in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge for 3 to 5 days. I always make sure to use a secure lid, otherwise your fridge will be smelling of garlic!
