Homemade Baileys Hot Chocolate
Imagine this… your favourite Irish cream turned into a smooth, velvety and delicious hot chocolate. You can make this drink in just 5 minutes, and here’s how! Let’s get making…
There’s no doubt that I’ll be making this dreamy Baileys hot chocolate whenever the weather gets colder. It’s rich, creamy, indulgent and I make it with actual chocolate and cocoa powder.
I’m known for pouring Baileys on just about every dessert going, so of course, hot chocolates are no exception! Nothing is safe from a little splash… hence the creation of my Baileys cheesecake, and just like this drink, it tastes so good too.
I like to add a topping of whipped cream, marshmallows and grated chocolate, and trust me, this topping combo tastes utterly amazing.
Recipe Ingredients
Here are the few ingredients I used to make this recipe:
- Baileys Irish Cream: Of course, you can’t make this hot chocolate without it. I used their original flavour, but they also have new flavours now like salted caramel, espresso cream and Belgium chocolate.
- Milk: I used full fat milk for a creamy texture, but you can use whatever milk or milk alternative that you like.
- Dark Chocolate: Use any dark chocolate that you like. Instead of dark chocolate, you can use milk chocolate or Bailey’s chocolate truffles for extra oomph.
- Cocoa Powder: I add this for extra depth of flavour. If you’re looking to cut down on ingredients, then you can swap cocoa powder and dark chocolate for instant hot chocolate powder.
How To Make Hot Chocolate With Baileys Irish Cream
Here’s a summary of how I make this hot chocolate. You can get the full recipe instructions on the recipe card below:
I start by pouring milk into a pan that’s heated on a low heat, then I add broken pieces of dark chocolate and cocoa powder to the pan. I whisk everything together thoroughly until the chocolate has melted.
Then I remove the pan from the heat, add 4 tablespoons of Baileys and whisk everything together. I recommend you add 1 to 2 tablespoons first, then add more to taste (I do like mine quite strong).
Last but not least, I pour the mixture into my mug and top it with squirty cream, marshmallows and grated chocolate. And that’s it! It takes like 5 minutes to make, but it might or might not take me even less time to finish it!
Make It In One Cup!
I don’t always want to make this drink over the stove, especially when I just want one serving or I don’t want to wash a lot up.
To do this, I heat milk in the microwave (you can also heat and froth the milk with a coffee machine). Then I add dark chocolate and cocoa powder and thoroughly mix. If the milk cools down before the chocolate melts, then I warm it up again.
Finally, I add Bailey’s followed by my toppings and drink up.
My Top Tips
If you want to make a bigger batch, you can double or triple the recipe ingredients to serve even more people, especially at parties and gatherings.
I don’t add sugar because it’s sweet enough for me, but if you have a sweet tooth, you might want to add sugar before pouring the drink into your mug.
I use a whisk to combine the chocolate and cocoa powder into the milk. I find it works better at preventing lumps than using a spoon or fork.
How To Serve Baileys Hot Chocolate
I like to serve this drink with some biscuits to munch on, like these classic shortbread biscuits, oat biscuits and chunky nyc cookies.
If you’re feeling for cake, then I recommend a slice of this chocolate orange cake or some of this coffee and walnut cake. You can of course just enjoy this drink on its own.
