What Is A Milkshake?
A milkshake is a cool drink made from blended or thoroughly shaken ice cream and milk. Milkshakes are usually flavoured with sweeteners and other flavourings like peanut butter or Biscoff (like this Lotus Biscof milkshake).
They can be served in cool mason jars like this or large glasses. Don’t forget large straws, they’re the best way to enjoy homemade peanut butter milkshakes.

Can You Mix Milk And Peanut Butter?
Yes, you can mix peanut butter and milk together! It creates a delicious combo you can enjoy in a milkshake or smoothie.
Peanut butter is the perfect addition to any milkshake, it adds a slight salty flavour to the sweetness that comes from the ice cream and milk mixture.
What Blender Is Best For Milkshakes (And Smoothies)?
You do not need a fancy and super expensive blender to make milkshakes and smoothies. There are so many blenders out there that will do the job!
I personally use this blender from Ninja Foodie, it gives me the best results without the need to pay a fortune. Recently, I’ve been using this newest Ninja foodie model.
Peanut Butter Milkshake Recipe Ingredients
To make this peanut butter milkshake you only need the 3 ingredients listed below.
- Vanilla Ice Cream: I like to use vanilla ice cream when making peanut butter milkshakes, but you don’t have to stick with vanilla. I occasionally use ice cream with cookie dough and brownie chunks.
- Milk: I use full fat milk, but you can use any variety of milk that you like.
- Peanut Butter: Smooth or crunchy… decisions decisions. I’m a sucker for using smooth peanut butter, but you can use crunchy peanut butter like the Five Guys’ Milkshake.
You can add additional flavours and toppings like whipped cream and chopped peanuts, but these additions are optional.
How To Pick The Best Peanut Butter?
There’s lots of peanut butters available for purchase (you can also make your own). Look for peanut butters with few additives and oils. Usually, organic peanut butters contain only peanuts and salts.
How To Make Peanut Butter Milkshake
Below is step-by-step guide on how to make the best peanut butter milkshake with vanilla ice cream. Full recipe instructions are on the recipe card:
Step One:
Add milk, ice cream and peanut butter into the blender.
Step Two:
Blend the mixture for 20 to 30 seconds or until you have reached your desired consistency.
Feel free to add more ice cream to thicken the mixture or more milk to liquefy the milkshake texture. You can even add more peanut butter to increase the peanut butter flavour.
Step Three:
Pour the milkshake into your cup. You can add additional toppings such as whipped cream and drizzled peanut butter. Now it’s time for you to sit back, relax and enjoy!
Recipe Variations – What Flavours Go Well With Peanut Butter?
- Chocolate
- Oreos (my favourite!!)
- Peanut butter cookies (for the peanut butter lovers)
- Bananas
- Jam (Jelly)
- Apples
- Nutella
- Berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)
- Bacon (like Five Guys)
- Brownies
What Makes A Milkshake Thicker?
To create a thick milkshake, you need to alter the milk to ice cream ratio. If you add more ice cream than milk, then the milkshake texture will be really thick.
Add more ice cream to the mixture and blend for 5 seconds if the milkshake is too runny. You could also add banana or berries to thicken the milkshake without ice cream.
How To Store Your Milkshake
This milkshake is best consumed freshly made; it can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours. If you’ve added additional ingredients like biscuits and cookies, they’ll become soggy if not consumed immediately.
Optional Milkshake Toppings
Top this peanut butter milkshake with whatever you want, I’ve suggested a couple of my favourite toppings below:
- Whipped cream
- Drizzled peanut butter
- Coffee granules
- Chopped peanuts
- Crushed cookies
Which Milkshake Is Best?
My favourite go-to milkshake is peanut butter and Oreos blended together. To make this version, add Oreo cookies to the blender with peanut butter, milk and ice cream. Blend the ingredients, serve and enjoy!
For the best milkshake ever, make it with this homemade Biscoff ice cream or this honeycomb ice cream. They are both easy to make and you don’t need an ice cream machine to make it.
My Top Tips
Place the serving glasses in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes before serving. This helps to chill the glasses and maintains a cool, thick and creamy milkshake texture.
Decorate the glasses by dipping the rim in melted peanut butter then into crushed peanuts. This is an easy and quick way to make your glasses looking stunning with little effort.
Add peanut butter last to the blender to avoid it sticking and not blending into the milkshake properly.
Recipe Variations
If you want to make a healthier milkshake, you can use frozen bananas instead of ice cream and dairy free or skimmed milk instead of full fat milk.
For extra texture you can add chocolate peanuts (or plain peanuts) to the ice cream ingredients. The longer you blend the ingredients the finer the pieces of peanuts will be.
Make a chocolate peanut butter milkshake by adding tablespoons of chocolate sauce, cocoa powder or melted chocolate.
Make a banana and peanut butter milkshake by adding half a ripe banana into the mixture. After blending the ice cream ingredients together, you can add more milk if you want it runnier.
For a Five Guy’s peanut butter milkshake top with whipped cream!
Can I Use Almond Butter Instead Of Peanut Butter?
Yes you can! If you don’t want to use peanut butter, you can use alternatives like almond butter or cashew butter.
