Hot chocolate stirrers are fun, easy and so indulgent! They make cute edible Christmas gifts and are the perfect addition to hot drinks. With this recipe, you’ll learn how to make hot chocolate sticks with multiple topping ideas!
In my house no hot drink is complete without adding hot chocolate stirrers to them, especially in the winter period. When it cold, windy and raining heavily, the one thing that can easily put a smile on my face is making these homemade chocolate sticks. They’re not only perfect for the winter period but also make great homemade Christmas gifts. Because It’s true that the best Christmas gifts you can get is ones you can eat!
Easily customisable, you can personalise each stirrer with different designs and chocolate flavours. Plus, the type of toppings you can choose are pretty much endless. What I love about these chocolate stirrers is that you can go as wild or as minimal as you please; it’s a chance to get creative.
What Are Chocolate Stirrers?
If you’ve never made or heard of chocolate stirrers before, then you’re definitely in for a treat!
Hot chocolate stirrers are melted chocolate that has dried with a wooden spoon or stick in the centre. Some stirrers have different toppings such as marshmallows, caramel and chocolate chips. If you’re wondering how to use them, it’s just like using a spoon. You dip chocolate stirrers into a cup of hot milk and stir gently until the chocolate has melted. You’ll be left with a delicious and indulgent hot chocolate drink.
Usually, hot chocolate stirrers are dunked and mixed into milk. But between you and me adding instant coffee granules makes it taste EVEN BETTER!
These stirrers are also called hot chocolate sticks or hot chocolate spoons; chocolate spoons usually have wooden spoons in the middle as opposed to lolly sticks.
Watch How To Make It
Below is a video guide on how to make hot chocolate stirrers with shot glasses. The process is the same regardless of which container you use. Below I have suggested the best containers to use for making hot chocolate spoons.
Ingredients
Making this treat is fairly simple and requires minimal ingredients. The main ingredient is of course chocolate and the type of chocolate you use is up to you and your preference. White chocolate will be quite sweet in flavour, milk chocolate less and dark chocolate will be rich and strong in flavour.
If you are planning to mix these hot chocolate stirrers into hot chocolate rather than plain milk. Then dark chocolate may be a better match. Unless you’re a sweet tooth, I use milk and white chocolate regardless of what I am dipping it into!
There is quite a large range of toppings and fillings to choose from, below I’ve jotted a few suggestions.
What Toppings Can I Make?
I stuck with white chocolate chips, sprinkles and marshmallows but there are so many flavours to top your chocolate stirrers with. Check out a few ideas below:
- Caramel Chunks
- Fudge
- Candy Cane
- Mini Chocolate Reindeers
- Mini Gingerbread Man
- Chocolate Buttons
- Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
- Mint Aero Balls
- Maltesers
- Kinder Chocolate Squares
- Sauce (for example caramel sauce or chocolate sauce)
What Hot Chocolate Flavours Can I Make
You can go with a theme flavour like white chocolate or make a selection of flavours. When creating my own hot chocolate stirrers I stuck with white chocolate, milk chocolate and occasionally mixed the two. Below are more flavour ideas to spark your imagination:
- Galaxy Chocolate
- Dairy Milk Chocolate Oreo
- Milky Way White Chocolate
- Terry’s Chocolate Orange
- Dairy Milk Caramel
- Chilli Chocolate
- Dark Chocolate
- Mint Aero
What To Use As A Mould
I made my hot chocolate stirrers in shot glasses. The best stress-free mould to use is silicon moulds like these. They allow the chocolate to come out easily. You could also use yoghurt pots too. If you’re not using silicon moulds, I’ll show what to do if they get stuck in my top tips section later on.
How To Make Hot Chocolate Stirrers (With Shot Glasses)
Below is a step-by-step guide on how to make hot chocolate stirrers with this recipe. Making them with shot glasses or any other mould is quite simple. Don’t forget to check out my video too!
Step One:
Grease the shot glasses or moulds with vegetable oil and set aside for later. Break the chocolate into small pieces and place in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave till melted. Microwave at short 10 second bursts stirring on each occasion. If you’re a using more than one type of chocolate like milk and white chocolate, then microwave in different bowls.
Step Two:
Place each chocolate in its own piping bag and seal the ends with a knot.
Step Three:
Fill the chocolate two thirds full into the moulds / shot glasses.
Step Four:
Add a lolly stick or spoon into the middle of each mould, ensuring that the sticks are pressed right down to the bottom of the chocolate. The sticks should hold its place when stuck into the chocolate. Tap the glasses on the table to remove trapped air.
Step Five:
Add toppings such as marshmallows and chocolate chips on top of the melted chocolate. Re-centre any wooden sticks or spoons that has slanted and place in the fridge to chill for 1 to 2 hours or until set.
Step Six:
When set gently pull them out of the moulds. If you are gifting these chocolate stirrers, wrap them in cellophane and tie with a ribbon. You can also add a tag with directions such as ‘stir me in hot milk’ or leave a cute message. If you’re not gifting this hot chocolate stirrers recipe for Christmas or any other occasion, simply stir in hot milk and enjoy!
My Top Tips
If you have made these chocolate stirrers in shot glasses or any other type of glass mould. It can be a lot harder to take out than using rubber moulds. A great tip to remove the stirrers is to grease the mould with vegetable oil before pouring the melted chocolate into it. If you’re still having trouble, pour hot water into a cup and gently dip the shot glass into hot water for no more than 10 seconds. Give the stick a pull and it should come out, but that pattern may smudge. That’s why it’s best to use silicon moulds.
Use good quality chocolate and your favourite brands such as Dairy Milk, Aero, Galaxy and Milky Way. As the chocolate sticks are dipped into plain milk, the type of chocolate used really does make a difference.
It can get quite messy filling chocolate into moulds, that’s why I pour the chocolate into piping bags. If there’s mess around the sides of the moulds, simply wipe clean with tissue.

How To Make It Vegan
You can easily make this recipe vegan by using vegan-friendly toppings like these marshmallows and use vegan-friendly chocolate like Bourneville chocolate. Always check the ingredients before buying! Instead of stirring the hot chocolate sticks in milk, you can use milk alternatives such as almond milk, rice milk and soya milk.
How long do hot chocolate sticks keep
The great news is that these chocolate sticks last a very long time, that’s why they make great gifts. As chocolate has a long shelf life, these stirrers can last around 3 weeks, though this can be even longer depending on the types of toppings used. Keep in mind that biscuit toppings can get soft over time and marshmallows will harden overtime when exposed to air.

Thanks for the recipe. What’s the best way to store these so they don’t melt? Want to make them for a bake sale
Michelle
Hi Kiran, these stirrers will be great for a bake sale!
To keep them as cool as possible keep them in the fridge. You can also use cool packs to prevent melting whilst transporting them.
