Recipe Ingredients
Below are the ingredients needed for this recipe:
- Self-Raising Flour: Self-raising flour has a raising agent already added to it.

- Ham: Make ham and cheese scones! Instead of bacon you can use ham.
- Use Plain Flour: You can make scones with plain flour, make sure to add extra baking powder to give the scones a good rise.
- Herbs: Add diced herbs like oregano, thyme or rosemary to add extra flavour to the scones.
Bacon And Cheese Scones Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can freeze cheese and bacon scones!
To freeze, place the cut-out scones onto a lined baking tray (do not glaze them or sprinkle extra cheese). Place in the freezer for a few hours until frozen, then place into a freezer bag or container and put it back into the freezer. Put a layer of parchment paper to prevent sticking.
Using a combination of self-raising flour and baking powder help the scones to rise when baking in the oven.
An extra tip is to align the scones side by side so that they’re close to touching. This help the scones rise upwards as opposed to spreading out.
My Top Tips
Try not to roll the dough more than once, manipulating the dough too much can make the scones tough. You can roll the dough into a rough square or rectangle and cut the dough into squares with a knife. You won’t need a cookie cutter and all parts of the dough are used up.
Don’t have eggs? You can use milk instead to glaze the scones! Using milk will help create a brown glaze. Cheese will be sprinkled on top, so it doesn’t matter which glaze you use.
Use butter and milk straight from the fridge! The colder the better as this helps to prevent over-spreading.
If you don’t like crispy pieces of bacon, fry the bacon a little less than how you like it. So when it’s baking in the oven it will cook to your liking.
