Preheat your oven to 200°C (gas mark 6, 180°Fan) and line a baking tray with parchment paper (you might need two baking trays depending on the size).
If Using Custard Powder: Mix custard powder and hot water together to create the custard mix. The mixture should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Place the custard in the fridge and leave to cool down for around 5 minutes.
Take the pastry out of the fridge to thaw. Unroll the puff pastry sheet and leave it on the parchment paper that comes with it.
325 g Puff Pastry (1 Ready-Made Pack)
Spread the custard evenly on top of the pastry until all sides are coated, then sprinkle the chocolate chips on top.
3 tbsp Custard, 100 g Chocolate Chips
Take one end of the pastry (from the longest width) and fold the pastry in half. Gently press the pastry down with your hands.
Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut the pastry into strips. They should be roughly 3cm in thickness.
Pinch the two opposite ends of one strip and twist 2 times in the opposite direction. Repeat this step for all strips.Watch the video to see how to do this.
Place the twisted strips on the lined baking tray, whisk an egg and brush the egg over the pastry.
