Chocolate Twist

Who doesn’t love the smell of freshly baked pastries? I certainly do, especially when its homemade chocolate twists! It’s the perfect way to start the day and a recipe I’m sure you’ll want to keep forever.

I make it with ready-made puff pastry and shop-bought custard. So, when I say this recipe is quick and easy, it definitely is! The taste is sweet and buttery and the texture is flaky and soft too.

I can’t wait for you to try my chocolate twist recipe, you only need four ingredients to make it. I pretty much guarantee that it will go down well, it always does in my house!

Chocolate Torsades

This recipe is called a chocolate torsades in French, though I (and most of the UK) call it a chocolate twist. It’s pretty much the same thing, custard and chocolate chips are twisted in puff pastry and baked until beautifully golden brown.

Traditionally, they’re made with a vanilla pastry cream but I use custard as it’s easier and saves me a lot of time. Not only is it great for breakfast, but I also like to have it for brunch or to eat beside a nice hot coffee.

Do I Have To Make My Own Pastry?

Nope! Making homemade puff pastry is a great skill, but I like to make this treat in a matter of minutes especially when I’m hungry.

I like using ready-made puff pastry that is pre-rolled in parchment paper. You can buy a block of puff pastry but make sure you roll it out evenly before starting this recipe.

Chocolate Twist Recipe Ingredients

You’ll need the 4 ingredients I’ve listed below:

  • Puff Pastry: I used ready-made puff pastry.
  • Chocolate Chips: I used milk chocolate chips; you could use chocolate chunks (they’re bigger in size). Dark chocolate is a great alternative.
  • Custard: Fresh custard or instant custard powder is fine to use.
  • Egg: Used to egg wash the pastry for a beautiful golden-brown colour.

How To Make Chocolate Twists With Puff Pastry

Here’s a guide on how I make chocolate custard twists. You can get the full recipe instructions on the recipe card below:

Step One:

Rolled out puff pastry

I start by preheating my oven and lining my baking tray with parchment paper. If I’m using custard powder, I mix that with hot water to create my custard mix.

I unroll the thawed puff pastry sheet and leave it on the parchment paper that comes with it.

Step Two:

Chocolate chips on puff pastry

I spread the custard evenly on top of the pastry until all sides are coated, then sprinkle the chocolate chips on top.

Step Three:

Puff pastry sheet folded over

Next I take one end of the pastry (from the longest width) and fold the pastry in half. I gently press the pastry down with my hands. You can watch the video to see how to do this.

Step Four:

Pastry cut into long strips

Using a pizza cutter or knife, I cut the pastry into strips. They should be roughly 3cm in thickness.

Then I pinch the two opposite ends of one strip and twist 2 times in the opposite direction. I repeat this step for all strips.

Step Five:

Pastry strips twisted

The twisted strips are placed onto the lined baking tray, I whisk an egg and brush it over the pastry.

Finally, it’s baked in the oven for 17 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.

How To Serve

I just love having chocolate twists with a hot coffee, I mean that’s how Costa Coffee does it! Any hot drink will go well with freshly baked pastries. I recommend a Biscoff latte or a chocolate orange hot chocolate.

You could serve it with other breakfast pastries like these homemade bacon and cheese turnovers or simply eat it by itself.

How To Store And Freeze Chocolate Twists

To store, I keep leftovers in an airtight container and eat it within 2 to 3 days (they’re best eaten freshly baked).

If you want to freeze these chocolate torsades, place them in the freezer uncovered until frozen. Then transfer to freezer bags or an airtight container and keep in the freezer.

To defrost, simply take the twists out of the freezer and leave to thaw. Reheat them in the oven for a few minutes for them to crisp up again.

Chocolate Twist Recipe Variations

Add cinnamon: I LOVE adding a sprinkling of cinnamon, it will take this chocolate twist recipe to a whole new level.

Add Nuts: I find chocolate and hazelnut is a classic combination, adding a few crushed nuts will add extra texture and flavour.

Leave The Custard Out: I have to admit, I prefer these chocolate twists with as little custard as possible. You could make it even more chocolatey by using chocolate spread instead of custard.

Hi Sarah, you can freeze them uncooked or after cooking (once they have cooled down). I prefer freezing before cooking.

Hi, do you use instant custard (the little packages that say to just mix with water) or custard powder (that says to mix with milk and bring to a boil) for this? Thank you
