Cookies and biscuit lovers get ready! These Mary Berry fork biscuits (with a chocolate twist) is one to try: they’re buttery, soft, tasty and so delicious. Find out how to make them below.
There’s nothing better than homemade biscuits! They taste so much better than shop brought ones and these biscuits are made with just 4 ingredients! Fork biscuits are one of the easiest biscuits you could ever make: It’s quick, simple and tastes great too. This delicious creation is one of Mary Berry’s recipes, so you already know it’s going to be good.
I’m yet to find anybody who doesn’t love them as much as I do, it’s a must-have recipe I think everyone should know. And of course, I’ve made a little twist by adding white chocolate chips. This subtle hint of chocolate makes these biscuits completely irresistible.
Recipe Ingredients
A mixture of flour, butter and sugar is basically a shortbread mixture. But this recipe uses self-raising flour instead of plain flour, so in other words it’s shortbread with self-raising flour. This means these fork biscuits are less crumbly but more tender and softer. The 4 basic ingredients you’ll need to make these biscuits are listed below:
- Self-Raising Flour: Provides structure and helps the fork biscuits to rise.
- Butter: You can use either salted or unsalted butter.
- Caster Sugar: Caster sugar also called superfine sugar.
- White chocolate Chips: The addition of white chocolate chips is optional; I only used a small amount to provide a subtle taste in every bite. I made a list of flavour variations you can add below, you could also leave out any additional flavours for a plain biscuit recipe.
This biscuit recipe has no egg, so it’s perfect for anyone with an egg allergy. Be sure to check there’s no egg in the other ingredients you use too.

How To Make Mary Berry Fork Biscuits Step-By-Step
Below is a step-by-step guide on how to make Mary Berry fork biscuits, full recipe instructions are on the recipe card at the bottom with a video.
Step One:
Preheat the oven to 180°C (gas mark 4, 350°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
Place the butter and sugar into a large mixing bowl and cream together until the mixture is light and fluffy.
Step Two:
Then add the self-raising flour and white chocolate chips into the mixing bowl and mix together until parts start to clump together.
Step Three:
Use your hands to bring the dough together to form a ball.
Step Four:
With a spoon, scoop a walnut size of dough and place it into the palm of your hand. Roll the dough into a ball and place on a lined baking tray. Leave around a 5cm gap between each ball, as they do spread in the oven.
See my video on how I did this.
Step Five:
With a fork, gently press down each ball to flatten it and leave a pattern. Then bake the fork biscuits in the oven for 13 to 15 minutes, they’ll look quite pale yet slightly golden. Leave the biscuits to cool down for a few minutes before moving to cool down entirely on a cooling rack.
Are Biscuits Freezeable?
Yes, most homemade biscuits freeze well and you can freeze these fork biscuits too. Allow the biscuits to cool down completely and place them into an air-tight container and freeze for up to 3 months. When you are ready to eat them, simply take the biscuits out of the freezer and leave at room temperature to thaw.
Variations Of Fork Biscuits
As these fork biscuits are made with a base of butter, flour and sugar; so many different flavours can be added to this recipe. Below is a list of even more variations you can make to this recipe instead of white chocolate chips:
- Lemon: Lemon is a popular addition, to make lemon fork biscuits simply add the zest of one lemon.
- Cocoa Powder: Make chocolate fork biscuits by adding 15g of a rich and dark cocoa powder like this.
- Dried Fruit: Raisins, cranberries, apricot, dried apple and other dried fruit.

Penny
I made these first exactly as the recipe stated and they were very good! I did up the chocolate chips to about 60g. Then I made them again. The second time, when I was creaming the butter and sugar, I added 50g of melted white chocolate chips and used about another 50g as whole chocolate chips. Oh my goodness! These were amazing. I turned the heat down to 325 on convection (fan) bake but that is probably just my oven as I have burnt too many cookies and biscuits to even count.
