Recipe Ingredients
Below are the 3 ingredients needed for this recipe:
- Ready-made Puff Pastry: Use pre-rolled ready-made puff pastry. Leave the pastry to thaw for at least 15 minutes before starting this recipe.
- Cinnamon: Any brand of ground cinnamon is fine to use.
- Light Brown Sugar: Light brown sugar is best to use for a tasty caramelised flavour.
Can I Make Vegan Puff Pastry Cinnamon Twists?
It’s so easy to make these puff pastry cinnamon twists vegan. Most ready-made puff pastry like Just Rol are naturally vegan. Instead of butter, use vegan butter alternatives or margarine.
If the butter alternative you are using is too hard to spread, you can melt the butter in the microwave. Add cinnamon and sugar to it, then brush it all over the pastry.

How To Twist Puff Pastry
Twisting the pastry can look difficult, but trust me, it’s so simple.
Once you’ve spread the cinnamon mixture over the puff pastry sheet, take one end of the pastry (from the longest width) and fold the pastry in half.
To twist, pinch the two opposite ends of one strip and twist 3 to 4 times in the opposite direction. Repeat this step for all strips, watch the video to see how I did this.
The tighter you twist the pastry the firmer and crispier they become. If the pastry has less than 3 twists, then it’s likely to unravel a bit in the oven. The texture will be softer, the width will be wider and they won’t hold a stick shape.

How To Make Cinnamon Puff Pastry Twists
Below is a step-by-step guide on how to make cinnamon twists using ready-made puff pastry. Full recipe instructions are on the recipe card.
Step One:

Preheat your oven to 190°C (375ºF) (gas mark 5, 170°Fan) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
In a mixing bowl, mix butter, light brown sugar and cinnamon together with a spoon until combined.
Step Two:

Unroll the ready-made puff pastry and spread the cinnamon mixture evenly over all the pastry.
Step Three:

Take one end of the pastry (from the longest width) and fold the pastry in half. Gently press the pastry down with your hands.
Step Four:

Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut the pastry into strips. They should be roughly 1.5cm (0.6 inches) in thickness (this will create around 12 to 13 strips).
Step Five:

Pinch the two opposite ends of one strip and twist 3 to 4 times in the opposite direction. Repeat this step for all strips. Watch the video to see how I did this.
Step Six:

Place the twisted strips on the lined baking tray. If you would like a golden-brown finish, spread melted butter over the pastry twists.
Bake in the oven for 17 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
My Top Tips
If you use pastry straight from the fridge without thawing it, it will break apart when unrolling. Allow at least 15 minutes for the pastry to thaw before starting the recipe.
For best results, make sure the pastry is thawed but still cold. If the pastry is too warm, you’ll find that it will start to soften and stretch apart when handling it.
If you want to add even more flavour, you can add ground ginger and nutmeg to create a gingerbread flavour like these gingerbread cookies. Oh my, it’s the perfect flavour for Christmas.
For an added crunch, sprinkle demerara sugar and cinnamon over the twists brushed with butter, then bake in the oven. You’ll thank me later!

How To Store & Freeze
Homemade cinnamon twists are best eaten freshly baked out of the oven. However, if you want to store them, keep in an airtight container and eat within 2 to 3 days.
If you want to make cinnamon pastry twists ahead of time, you can freeze the uncooked pastry. Simply spread the cinnamon mixture over the pastry and twist the pastry into twists. Place the twists in the freezer uncovered until frozen. Then, transfer to freezer bags or an airtight container and keep in the freezer.
Equipment Needed
You don’t need a lot of equipment to make this recipe. Though I do find using a pizza cutter very helpful when cutting clean lines to make pastry twists.
Don’t forget a baking tray and parchment paper to avoid any sticking.
