Recipe Ingredients

You only need the five ingredients below to make roasted tenderstem broccoli. You might have most of the ingredients like salt, garlic and black pepper at home already.

  • Tenderstem Broccoli: Also called long stem broccoli; it’s widely available in supermarkets, usually in the fruit and vegetable section.
  • Garlic: Adds flavour and warmth to the dish, I like to slice the garlic cloves into chunks as this prevents it from burning in the oven if cut too thin.
  • Olive Oil: Used to help the tenderstem broccoli cook and adds flavour. Instead of olive oil you can use any standard cooking oil like sunflower oil or vegetable oil.
  • Salt & Pepper: This is added for extra flavour, feel free to leave this out if you want.

How To Prep Long Stem Broccoli For Roasting

Before we start roasting, here’s how to prepare the tenderstem broccoli.

Thoroughly wash the broccoli and pat it dry using a paper towel. There’s no need to cut the broccoli spear (the stem), as you can eat every part of this vegetable.

Step Three:

Roast in the oven for 15 minutes or until tender. Roasting tenderstem broccoli can’t get any easier right?

What To Serve With Tenderstem Broccoli

Roasted tenderstem broccoli is the perfect side dish, it goes with so many recipes and it’s a great substitute for standard broccoli.

My favourite recipe to pair with this is my honey and chilli Chinese crispy beef, I don’t cook this meal without it! It also goes well with this homemade crispy chilli chicken. Below are a few more recipes:

  • Crispy Panko Chicken
  • Char Siu Pork
  • Stuffing With Sausage Meat

How To Store Tenderstem Broccoli

Fresh Cut Broccoli: To keep freshly cut tenderstem broccoli at its best, you have a couple of options: you can place it in a plastic food bag and store it in the fridge, or you can wrap the broccoli in a damp paper towel and refrigerate it. This helps to create a healthy, moist and breathable environment to maintain its freshness.

Broccoli From The Supermarket: Store in the refrigerator for the amount of time specified on the packaging, this may be around 5 days plus.

Cooked Tenderstem Broccoli: Freshly cooked broccoli will taste best eaten straight away. If you have leftovers that you want to keep, allow the broccoli to cool down completely before transferring it to an airtight container. Store in the fridge and eat within 3 to 5 days.

Can You Reheat Tenderstem Broccoli?

Yes, you can reheat tenderstem broccoli. You can either reheat it in the oven until warmed or you can place the broccoli in the microwave for about 1 minute.

Other Ways To Cook Tenderstem Broccoli

  • Frying Tenderstem Broccoli: Heat your wok or frying pan over a high heat and add oil. When the pan is hot add sliced garlic and stir-fry for roughly 30 seconds. Then add the tenderstem broccoli and fry constantly stirring for 3 to 5 minutes or until cooked.
  • Steam Tenderstem Broccoli: Bring a pan of water to the boil and place the broccoli in a colander or steaming pan and steam for 3 to 4 minutes or until cooked.
  • Boil Tenderstem Broccoli: Bring a pan of water to the boil and add the tenderstem broccoli. Boil for 3-4 minutes or until cooked. Drain the water and serve.

Can You Use Standard Broccoli?

Yes, you can use standard broccoli in this recipe instead of tenderstem broccoli. Follow the recipe instructions in the same way, but you would need to cut the broccoli into thin floret pieces, leaving as much stem as possible. Cutting the broccoli into thin pieces will quicken the time taken to cook in the oven.

How To Freeze & Reheat Tenderstem Broccoli

To freeze, leave the broccoli to cool down completely then place it onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Place in the freezer for 4 to 6 hours or until frozen. Then transfer the broccoli into an airtight container or freezer safe bag and store in the freezer for up to 6 months.

My Top Tips

Spread the tenderstem broccoli out in a single layer on the baking sheet. Overcrowding can lead to uneven cooking.

Roast the broccoli in the preheated oven for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until it’s tender and slightly crispy on the edges. Check it regularly to avoid overcooking. If you want even roasting, give the broccoli a toss or flip it with a spatula about halfway through the cooking time.

To add even more flavour, use infused oil (like garlic infused oil or infused chilli oil) to add even more flavour.
