Recipe Ingredients
Below are the few ingredients needed for this puff pastry pizza rolls recipe:
- Puff Pastry: Use pre-rolled readymade puff pastry that has been rolled out already. Take the pastry out of the fridge to thaw for 15 minutes before use.
- Pasta Sauce: Use any tomato sauce but avoid using chunky sauces. Tomato puree is a great alternative option.
- Pepperoni: I used thin sliced pepperoni; you could use ham instead.
- Grated Cheese: I used mature cheddar cheese but you can use your favourite cheese or a mixture of cheeses. Mozzarella and parmesan are great options.
- Egg (Optional): An egg is used to glaze the pastry to create a beautiful golden-brown colour once baked.
How To Make Puff Pastry Pizza Rolls (Step-By-Step)
Below is a step-by-step guide on how to make puff pastry pizza rolls. Full recipe instructions are on the recipe card (these savoury rolls are also called pinwheels, pizza scrolls or wheels).
Step One:
Top Tip: Before you start this recipe, take the pastry out of the fridge to thaw for 15 minutes. This prevents the pastry from breaking apart whilst unrolling.
Unroll the puff pastry sheet.
Spoon the pasta sauce on top and evenly spread a thin layer using the back of a spoon leaving a 1cm border.
Step Two:
Evenly line pepperoni slices on top of the sauce then sprinkle grated cheese on top. Do not cover the border area with toppings, keep this section clear.
Step Three:
Roll the puff pastry sheet tightly starting with the longest side. Seal by gently pressing the dough at the end.
Place in the fridge for 10 minutes, in the meantime preheat your oven to 200°C (gas mark 6, 400°F).
Step Four:
With a sharp knife, cut the pizza roll into 12 equal slices. They should be around 1.5cm each.
Place the pizza wheels onto a lined baking tray. Whisk an egg and brush the pastry with the beaten egg.
Place in the oven for 13 to 15 minutes or until the pastry is golden and the cheese has melted.
And you’re done! Making pizza wheels really is this simple.
How To Serve And Store Puff Pastry Pizza Pinwheels
These pizza pinwheels are best served freshly baked and warm. You can keep them for later but it’s 100% best eaten fresh (whilst the cheese is all melted and delish).
But that doesn’t mean you can’t keep them for later! You can also enjoy these savoury pinwheels cold or at room temperature. So they double up as great make-ahead party snack.
To store, keep in an airtight container and place in the fridge. Eat within 3 days.
To serve, eat by themselves or dip into delicious sauces like homemade garlic mayo sauce.
What Toppings Can I Use?
There are so many different toppings you can add to pizza scrolls, I listed a few examples below:
- Herbs (basil and oregano)
- Ham
- Pesto
- Shredded Chicken
- Olives
- Chilli Peppers
- You can also make it vegetarian by omitting the pepperoni from this recipe.
How To Freeze And How To Cook From Frozen
Once the pizza pinwheels have cooled down completely, place in an airtight container and keep in the freezer for up to 2 months.
To cook from frozen, preheat the oven to 180°C (gas mark 4, 350°F) and bake for 10 minutes or until hot throughout.
