Green Chef Review – Is It Worth It?
Want to try Green Chef subscription box? I tried Green Chef, and this is my honest review. I’ve detailed everything you need to know including the meals I chose, the cost and most importantly whether it’s worth it.
I tried 4 different low-carb and keto meals from Green Chef UK (with my own money) and here is my honest review!
I’m always looking for ways to save time in the kitchen! Working, prepping and cooking everyday isn’t always ideal.
I’ve tried a few delivery boxes in my time, but hearing that Green Chef provide high quality, healthy and dietary specific meals made we want to try them out.
I brought 2 weeks’ worth of meals (2 meals per week) and in short, I absolutely loved it. It made making low carb and keto meals really easy and gave me the chance to try more health-conscious recipes without constantly googling ‘is this Keto’.
Green Chef Pros & Cons
Before I get into the full review, I’ve summarised the main pros and cons below. I’ve based this on the quality of ingredients, ease of ordering, how easy the meals are to prepare, the taste and my overall experience:
- The meals are delicious and superseded my expectations
- High-quality, seasonal and organic ingredients
- A great way to try different meals, seasonings and flavours
- Quick and easy to prepare
- Cooking instructions are clear and easy to follow
- Green Chef is great for dietary specific diets like keto, low carb, vegan and others
- Great for health-conscious eaters
- You can mix and match meals across different dietary preferences
- Limited food options (especially if you’re a meat eater)
- Some ingredients like cheese come unprepared (you’ll have to grate it yourself)
- It is expensive (but reasonable with discounts)
- Currently can’t order for 1 person; 2 meals for 2 people is the minimum
- Shipping costs are not included in the price
- Seeing other dietary meals outside of your preference can be annoying if you follow a strict diet.

How Does Green Chef UK Work?
Green Chef is a meal kit delivery service that does all the hard work for you! They send pre-portioned ingredients with recipe cards to your door on a day you choose.
Getting started with Green Chef is fairly easy. You start by choosing your menu preferences, the number of recipes you want per week and the number of servings you want per meal. This 40% OFF discount is automatically applied to your total.
Green Chef cater for keto, flexitarian, low carb, vegetarian, vegan and pescatarian diets.
You have the option to skip meal orders for up to four weeks in advance and modify the delivery day to your convenience. Plus, you may cancel at any moment!
Ingredients are bagged and labelled with matching numbers on recipe cards for easy meal identification.
These recipe cards also include nutritional information, serving size, ingredients and other information like cooking instructions.
Green Chef Delivery And Packaging
You can pick a Monday to Sunday delivery day and a time between 8.00am to 19.00pm or a shorter window between 8.00am to 12.00pm (which currently costs £2.99 more).
When it comes to packaging, there was a lot of it as I ordered 4 meals in one box. The components were divided into brown bags, and those that required refrigeration were placed in an insulated bag with ice packets to maintain the temperature.
Some ingredients were wrapped in plastic (like broccoli) and others came uncovered (like carrots and aubergines). In general, the amount of packaging could be decreased. It would be beneficial if Green Chef implemented a program to collect used boxes and repurpose them in their future shipments.
Delivery was very smooth and easy; I was sent a message early on delivery day stating an hour window of delivery. You can also track your box to see where it is. I selected a Sunday delivery from 8.00am to 19.00pm and it came around 14.30pm.
Green Chef Menu
I haven’t tried a keto diet before so I thought the meals would be bowls full of veg. But it was quite the opposite…
I tried meals that I would have never tried before and seasonings like zhoug paste that I haven’t come across before. In my opinion, Green Chef have some of the best recipes and it’s an added bonus that their meals are healthy and nutritionist approved.
You can look at the menu 5 weeks in-advance which I liked; it allowed me to anticipate what meals I’ll be having.
I really wish they had a wider menu, there’s only 30 weekly recipes to choose from. I ordered 4 meals at a go and I’ll just say I wasn’t spoiled for choice. If you’re ordering 4 plus meals per week, then you might feel limited in options.
Basic ingredients like salt, black pepper, water and olive oil are classed as pantry or cupboard ingredients and are not included in your deliveries. When selecting meals, the recipe cards state which pantry ingredients you need if any.
What I Ordered From Green Chef UK
Below is the full list of meals I tried from Green Chef. My review on these meals are based on taste, portion size and ease of cooking.
Coriander And Peanut Chicken Thigh Curry
This dish was quite straightforward and didn’t require lots of pots and pans to make it. It was colourful, creamy and had a very delicious flavour.
Usually, I would eat a curry with rice but as this is a keto meal, it was served with roasted broccoli and I didn’t feel like I was missing out at all.
If you don’t want to make this dish with chicken thighs, there’s an optional upgrade to change the source of protein to chicken breast instead. Overall, I liked this dish and I think the portion size was spot on.
Beef Hot Pot With A Cheesy Aubergine Topping And Tenderstem
I utterly enjoyed eating this beef hot pot made with cheesy aubergine slices, the cheese and aubergine combo tasted so good.
This meal was exceptionally quick and easy, I would make this again on a busy day as it doesn’t require much time or effort.
This Green Chef review would not be complete without mentioning the quality. I could taste the quality of ingredients especially in the mince. This dish was my family’s favourite, they really enjoyed the quality of it and asked me on many occasions if I brought it!
Caramelised Hoisin Salmon With Sticky Broccoli Rice And Green Beans
The portion of salmon in this dish was quite big (which I was happy about).
The salmon was covered in hoisin sauce, that’s quite rich and strong in flavour. Next time I would probably use half the packet of hoisin sauce. Nevertheless, it was a tasty dinner meal.
You’re supposed to grate the broccoli to make broccoli rice but I decided to break the broccoli into florets and grill it in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes. Grating broccoli seemed like it would take forever!
Zhoug Giant Couscous Salad With Roasted Asparagus, Pecans And Orange
Now, this is not a keto meal, but I added it to my box because I wanted to give it a try. This is not a meal I would normally pick, and the menu picture looked quite bland in my opinion.
But oh, I was so wrong… the taste is delicious and the overall meal was light and refreshing! I wish the portions of couscous were bigger, it needed to be double in size.
It was super easy to prepare and most of the work is dicing ingredients into small chunks. I would 100% recommend this meal.
Are Green Chef Meals Easy To Cook?
My Green Chef meals were very easy to make and are perfect for beginners. The recipe cards were easy to follow and the step-by-step photos were very helpful too. The photos gave me an indication of what each stage of cooking should look like.
On average the meals took me around 40 to 45 minutes which is longer than the time estimated on the recipe cards. Though, as it was my first time making these recipes, I probably spent some time re-reading the instructions.
Does Green Chef Meals Taste Good?
I enjoyed the meals from Green Chef, they proved to me that healthy doesn’t have to mean boring. Their spices, pastes and sauces really add a lot of dimension and flavour to the dishes.
Despite the fact that this is my first go at keto, Green Chef made it easy for me and I didn’t feel like I was missing out on carbs or eating bland meals.
I am a big eater, so I really wish the portions were slightly bigger. For example, in my Caramelised Hoisin Salmon meal, there was only 1 carrot for two portions where two carrots would have helped to bulk up the meal. However, I was impressed with the size of the salmon.
My favourite meals were the beef hot pot, it was tasty, comforting and I really enjoyed the cheesy aubergine slices (I will definitely be having that again). I also liked the Zhoug Giant Couscous Salad as it blew my expectations, was fresh and full of flavour.
My least favourite meal was the Caramelised Hoisin Salmon only because it didn’t excite me as the other 3 meals did.
How Much Is Green Chef UK?
The price of Green Chef varies depending on how many meals you want per week per person. I ordered 4 meals for 2 people in one box, and it cost me £33.49 including £4.99 delivery.
Premium meals cost an additional £2.49, they are marked clearly and are usually placed at the top of the menu options.
The ingredients are organic and of high-quality, so Green Chef can be quite expensive. Discounts are useful to help balance out the cost, if you use this extra 40% OFF it makes the overall cost a lot cheaper.

Green Chef Customer Service
I did run into a small problem when trying to change my delivery date. The reschedule pop-up failed to load and the deadline to make alterations to the order was fast approaching, which is five days before delivery at 11.59pm.
They have a number you can call for support which they state is free, but I was charged £10.00 for less than 5 minutes (luckily the phone cut-off). It’s disappointing to be charged when they state that the number is free, so beware of that!
Chat support is open from 9am to 10am, I used their chat support the next day and they were very understanding and helpful. They also have a FAQ section that answers a range of question.
You can cancel very easily at any time by clicking on the ‘Cancel Subscription’ button or through contacting support.
Green Chef vs HelloFresh
If you didn’t know, HelloFresh owns Green Chef. That’s why the branding and website design feels and looks similar.
What makes Green Chef different from HelloFresh is that it caters to an audience with specific dietary requirements such as a vegan, low-carb, flexitarian, vegetarian, keto and pescatarian diet.
The cost per meal is slightly more expensive than HelloFresh, however, Green Chef offer a premium and organic meal kit service which they state is #1 Meal Kit for Eating Well.
HelloFresh have a larger number of recipes to choose from with 44 recipes every week whereas you can choose from 30 weekly recipes with Green Chef, check out this review on HelloFresh for more information.
Green Chef UK review (Final Summary)
To summarise my review, I would definitely recommend Green Chef! The meals were fresh, tasty and very easy to make. It eradicates the ‘what should we eat for dinner dilemma‘ and reduces the amount of trips to your local supermarket.
Though Green Chef is more expensive than others, I actually enjoyed it the most. Plus, if you use this 40% OFF discount (followed by 25% OFF for one month) it really makes it worth your while.
I think Green Chef is great for anyone who like me wants to eat healthier but find healthier meals quite boring. This is a fun-way to try new and exciting meals that are nutritionist-approved and also certified CCOF-organic!
So, is Green Chef worth the try? OMG YES!
