How To Make The Best Easter Sugar Cookies With This Easy Recipe
Looking for the best sugar cookies recipe that’s sweet, buttery and has a soft texture or perfect snap? You’re going to love making this! They’re perfect for decorating Easter designs and for any other festive occasion.
Easter is (almost) here and nothing puts me more in the Easter mood then making easy sugar cookies. The best part for me (apart from eating them) is deciding how I am going to decorate the sugar cookies with either icing or chocolate. Of course, I decorated them with with both ( you’ll see my Easter cookie decorating ideas below)!
This sugar cookie recipe is so versatile and is made with a sweet vanilla dough. There’s no need to chill the dough and the cookies keep their shape when baked. Even though I decorated my cookies with Easter decorations and used Easter cookie cutters, you can use any cookie cutter shapes for all occasions like Christmas.
Sugar Cookies Recipe Ingredients
To make these delicious homemade biscuits you’ll only need the 5 ingredients below and then anything you’ll want to decorate them with. You can make a huge batch of cookies with this recipe; I like to make lots of sugar cookies so I can decorate them in many different ways.
The Sugar Cookies:
- 300g Plain Flour
- 200g Caster Sugar
- 200g Unsalted Butter (block butter)
- 1 Egg
- 1 tbsp Vanilla Extract
The Icing Decoration:
- 200g Icing Sugar
- 3-4 tbsp Water
- 2-3 drops of Food Colouring
The Chocolate Decoration:
- 100g White Chocolate
- 100g Milk Chocolate
Are you ready to make the best Easter sugar cookies ever! I didn’t use a food processor to make these cookies. I simply used the ‘rub in method’ to cream my sugar and butter together. Beat in the egg and vanilla, mixed with a wooden spoon then added the flour. The dough comes together quickly and you can even freeze the dough or cooked cookies for later.
If you like your sugar cookies soft and slightly chewy in texture, follow the recipe and cook them in the oven for 8-10 minutes, they should look quite pale in colour and harden whilst cooling. If you like your biscuits to snap and have a crisp or crunchy texture, then bake in the oven for 10-13 minutes or until they start looking golden brown and leave to cool.
How To Make Easter Sugar Cookies
Makes: 40-45 | Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cooking Time: 8-13 minutes
Preheat the oven to 180°C (Gas Mark 4 / 350°F) and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.
Place your sugar and butter in a mixing bowl and cream together until combined.
Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
Stir in the flour and bring together until the mixture has formed a dough.
Roll the dough on a lightly floured work surface till you reach a thickness of around 1cm. With your cookie cutters, cut the cookies out from the dough and place them onto the baking tray.
Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes for soft sugar cookies or until the colour is light / pale golden brown. For crisp sugar cookies bake for a further 2-3 minutes. Once out of the oven, leave to cool for 5 minutes to harden.
Decorating Ideas For Your Easter Sugar Cookies
If you’re looking for icing that harden on your sugar cookies, well this icing recipe does just that! The chocolate hardens very quickly in around 5 minutes and the icing sugar I like to leave for around 4-6 hours to harden completely.
Below are a few ways I decorated these yummy sugar cookies for Easter with royal icing sugar and chocolate. From the sugar cookie dough, I cut out Easter eggs, bunnies and carrots from this pack of Easter cookie cutters.
Coating the cut-out sugar cookies in marbled icing was so much fun! Don’t be fooled by it’s appearance, it’s so simple and easy to do yourself. They look so beautiful and are fun Easter ideas for any adult, toddler and all the family.
Making Easter egg sugar cookies decorated with sprinkles and chocolate has got to be the easiest decorating idea. Simply spoon on melted chocolate in the centre of the cookie and spread it out slightly, using the back of the spoon. Sprinkle your sprinkles over the chocolate and leave to dry.
I love this carrot icing idea! Sometimes I don’t always feel for cookies completely covered in icing, that’s why I like to have many alternatives. I find this decorating idea has the right balance of cookies and icing.
